Rossini: Stabat MaterOpis:Despite establishing the bel canto tradition through a series of romantic, serious operas (Otello, William Tell) and elegant buffas (the timeless Barber Of Seville) Gioacchino Rossini retired at 37 to live life as a Parisian bon vivant. Fortunately, Rossini (1792-1868) came out of retirement to complete the Stabat Mater, a choral masterpiece every bit as impressive as his more famous works. An expression of the Mediterranean belief in life and faith, this setting of the Stabat Mater is written for full orchestra with four soloists and chorus. The text for this intense but highly melodic ten-movement piece dates from the 1200s and describes Mary's grief at the foot of the cross. The grand tuttis of the opening movement are complemented by a dedicated chorus, which is most effective in the expansive "Quando corpus morietur" and when performing a capella in "Eja, mater fons amoris". Soprano Patricia Pace is strong and expressive in the "Inflammatus", while mezzo Gloria Scalchi is not to be outdone in the strongly projected solos of "Fac ut portem". Carlo Colombara's bass is equally affecting, especially when reaching the D-flat near the end of the heroic "Cujus animam gementem". In the concluding "In Sempiterna Saecula". a complex double fugue leads to an extended choral crescendo. The vocal quartet is balanced beautifully, with Morandi's leadership rivalling the acclaimed 1955 Ferenc Fricsay recording for DG and the lauded 1981 EMI reading by Riccardo Muti. Texts are in the original Latin, though Naxos provide English translations in the extensive notes.
