This was a time of great wealth and also great uncertainty; Alamire combined his career as a musician with a period as Hapsburg spymaster at the court of Henry VIII and elsewhere. His patrons included the Arch duchess Margaret of Austria whose sad life made her commission liturgical music for the exequies of dead relations and secular music of an equally sombre kind--the motet "Proch Dolor" attributed to Josquin is a case in point as is the picturesquely tear-stained "Soubz cetoumbel" of Pierre de la Rue.
